ADDRESSING GOD

The Son of man said this unto his disciples: "Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am." In other words, it is well, fully good, honest and morally correct to address God's Son by his proper titles. It is, on the other had, not well, not fully good, not honest and morally correct to address God's Son without a proper title.

To many, especially in America, that will seem a rather peculiar comment to make, seeing it has become common to address God in very familiar terms. Make a note: We are talking specifically about addressing our Lord Jesus Christ, as in personal conversation - a prayer, a praise, a comment, or a response.

It is written about our salvation, "The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

It is also written, "Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."

It is plain why God demands this of us. We must not only believe in the Jesus of the scripture, but believe he is the Lord, the supreme one of the universe; believe he is the Christ, the anointed of God, for he is in fact God. To address our Lord Jesus Christ in terms of deity is to confess each time who he is. This is a sweet sound unto our heavenly Father. It is, also, keeping this fact in the forefront of importance, that "Jesus is the Lord." You are blessed for doing so.

As you remember, the first temptation in the Garden of Eden was for Adam and Eve to become one of the "gods." The temptation was not to become rich, for there was no money then. Nor was the temptation to become famous, for there were no other people to impress. Perhaps they thought if they were one of the gods, they could rule and reign over their own universe. Perhaps they also thought it a grand idea to speak with the other gods on a first name basis. But after their fall, how they must have hated the day when they embraced Lucifer's very own aspirations: "I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High."

Today, many people are falling into the same trap as Adam and Eve. They are not making a difference between themselves and God. What does this mean? It means in the word of God, there are only illustrations of God's people personally addressing Jesus with terms of deity such as Lord, Master, and Christ. Why do you think those who were seeking healing called him such? As you know, they were Jews, and not tea drinkers as in England where all sorts of lords abound. They were calling him Lord because he was their God, the God of their scripture, the God who had become flesh, and was dwelling among them. Hallelujah!

Today ministers accept, and receive, and even call themselves by various religious titles (with capitals): Pastor, Teacher, Evangelist, Prophet, Apostle, Brother, Father, Bishop, Cardinal, Pope, Reverend, etc. Yet they can stand in public and invoke the great God of the universe without the use of one of his glorious titles. In heaven, will God call them Pastor, while they only call him Jesus?

Apply the spirit of the word: "But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi. But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted."

Today, the Son of man asks the same question of his disciples, "But whom say ye that I am?"
